CBD (Cannabidiol)
Legal
Non-intoxicating cannabinoid available in hemp-derived products federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill. Sold as oils, tinctures, capsules, gummies, topicals, and beverages. FDA has approved one CBD drug (Epidiolex) for specific pediatric seizure disorders; broader therapeutic claims are not FDA-recognized.
Delta-10 THC
Gray area
Less-studied THC isomer sold as a hemp-derived cannabinoid. Federally in the same gray area as delta-8 THC. Reported by users as producing a milder, more uplifting effect than delta-8 or delta-9 THC, though clinical data is limited.
Delta-8 THC
Gray area
Mildly intoxicating cannabinoid typically synthesized from hemp-derived CBD. Federal legality is contested; the DEA has taken the position that synthetically derived delta-8 THC is a controlled substance, while the 2018 Farm Bill's plain text protects hemp-derived cannabinoids under 0.3% delta-9 THC. State-level bans and restrictions are widespread and changing.
Hemp Topicals (CBD Creams, Balms, Salves)
Legal
External-use hemp-derived products that deliver cannabinoids through the skin to localized areas. Non-intoxicating in standard formulations. Widely used for muscle and joint discomfort. Federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill; least restricted of the hemp product categories at the state level.
Hemp-Derived THC Beverages
Legal
Ready-to-drink beverages infused with hemp-derived delta-9 THC. Federally compliant if the total delta-9 THC content remains below 0.3% by dry weight, which in a 12oz beverage works out to roughly 1-10mg per can. A fast-growing alternative to alcohol in states where adult-use cannabis remains illegal.
