Hemp-Derived THC Beverages

Ready-to-drink beverages infused with hemp-derived delta-9 THC. Federally compliant if the total delta-9 THC content remains below 0.3% by dry weight, which in a 12oz beverage works out to roughly 1-10mg per can. A fast-growing alternative to alcohol in states where adult-use cannabis remains illegal.

Federal basis

2018 Farm Bill §10113. A 12oz beverage weighing approximately 340g (mostly water) can contain up to ~1g of dry matter, of which ≤0.3% delta-9 THC = ~3mg. Compliant products typically range 2-10mg per can.

Safety notes

  • Onset is faster than edibles (typically 15-45 minutes) because nano-emulsified THC absorbs through the digestive tract more rapidly than oil-based edibles. New consumers should start with 2-5mg and wait at least 90 minutes before redosing.
  • Hemp-derived THC beverages will produce a positive drug test result for THC metabolites.
  • Do not combine with alcohol without prior experience with both substances. Combined effects can be unpredictable.
  • Minnesota, California, Connecticut, and several other states have imposed dedicated regulatory frameworks (age limits, registration, potency caps). Check your state hemp section.

Hemp-derived THC beverages are the fastest-growing category in the hemp products space. They exist because the 2018 Farm Bill defined hemp by percentage of delta-9 THC by dry weight, not by absolute milligrams. In a heavy product like a beverage, the percentage cap allows several milligrams of true delta-9 THC per serving while remaining federally compliant.

The math

A 12oz canned seltzer weighs roughly 340g, of which the vast majority is water. The dry weight (everything other than water) is small, typically a few grams. 0.3% of that dry weight is the legal ceiling. Most compliant beverages are formulated to land between 2mg and 10mg of delta-9 THC per can.

Why dose matters

Beverage THC uses nano-emulsification to dissolve cannabinoids in water. This produces faster onset (15-45 min) than oil-based edibles (60-120 min). It also produces faster offset. The combination makes beverages closer to alcohol's onset curve than to traditional edibles.

State frameworks

Some states have moved to regulate hemp THC beverages specifically. Minnesota created a registration system in 2022. California enacted age and licensing requirements in 2024. Other states are following. Always check your state hemp section before purchasing.
